Base stud count divides wall length (converted to inches or millimeters) by your spacing — 16 in / 400 mm on-center is the default — and rounds up, then adds one extra stud to close out the end of the run. Each corner adds 2 studs, and each door or window opening adds 3 for the king, jack (trimmer), and cripple studs, which get added on top of the base count for the total.
16 in on-center spacing is standard for load-bearing walls because it aligns with 4×8 ft sheathing panels (48 in divides evenly into three 16 in bays) and keeps stud spacing within typical building requirements for wall strength. Corners and openings need extra framing — corner studs give sheathing something to nail to on both faces, while king and jack studs carry the header's load — so they're added on top of the repeating field studs rather than folded into the base count.
16 in (400 mm) on-center is standard for most load-bearing walls. 24 in (600 mm) is sometimes used for non-load-bearing interior walls to save material — check your local code and framing plan.
