We multiply length × width × depth (with depth converted from inches to feet) to get cubic feet, divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards, then multiply by a density figure set by your chosen stone type — roughly 1.3 tons per cubic yard for river rock up to 1.5 for fieldstone, flagstone, or limestone. Multiplying that weight by your price per ton gives estimated cost.
Density varies by stone type because different rock has different mineral composition and packs together differently, so a single weight-per-yard figure would be off for both light river rock and dense fieldstone. Because irregular stone leaves more air gaps than uniform crushed gravel, contractors typically treat calculated tonnage as a floor and round up when ordering for a wall or path rather than cutting it close.
Measure the wall's length and average height as "length" and "width" here, and use the wall's thickness as depth — then round up, since stacked stone has more air gaps than a flat bed.
