We start from a table pairing eyelet pair count with a base length for standard criss-cross lacing — for example 36 in for 5 pairs, 45 in for 6 pairs — then multiply that base by a style factor: 1.0 for criss-cross, 1.4 for straight/bar lacing, or 1.3 for loop-back. The result is matched to the closest standard retail lace length (24, 27, 30, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, or 84 in).
The base lengths reflect a well-established shoe industry rule tying eyelet count to lace length, since more rows mean more diagonal travel across the shoe regardless of style. Straight and loop-back lacing need noticeably more lace than criss-cross for the same eyelet count because the lace has to run a longer path per row instead of crossing diagonally, which is why matching your intended lacing style matters just as much as counting eyelets correctly.
Count the rows of eyelet holes on just one side of the shoe, from bottom to top — most sneakers have 5-7 pairs, while boots often have 6-10.
If you like extra lace to double-knot or wrap around the ankle, round up to the next standard retail length rather than the exact calculated minimum.
