How pool dosing is calculated

Every chemical on this page follows the same formula: subtract your current reading from the target, divide pool volume by 10,000 gallons, then multiply by a dosing constant sized to that chemical and product strength — for example 10.1 fl oz of 10% liquid chlorine, 0.15 lb of baking soda for alkalinity, or 0.125 lb of calcium chloride, all per 10,000 gallons per 1 ppm. If current already exceeds target, the result comes back negative and is flagged as dilute or drain instead.

These dosing constants come from standard pool-industry charts that translate a ppm change into product volume or weight for a given concentration — 10% liquid chlorine needs more volume than 12.5% to deliver the same boost, for instance. Treat the result as a starting dose: water temperature, existing stabilizer levels, and bather load all shift real-world demand, so adding chemicals gradually with a retest afterward beats one large addition.
