Estimate only — includes 10% waste for cuts; excludes joint sand and edge restraints.

How paver count is calculated

We multiply length by width for area, add 10% for waste from cuts around edges and borders, then divide by the face area of your chosen paver size and round up to a whole paver. Base material multiplies that same footprint by your gravel depth for cubic feet, then converts to cubic yards (27 cubic feet per yard) or cubic meters. Cost multiplies paver count by your price per unit.

A 10% waste allowance is standard in paver estimating because most patios and walkways need pieces cut to fit around curves, borders, and edges, and rounding up avoids running short mid-project. A compacted gravel base — typically 4 inches for a patio, deeper for a driveway — spreads load and improves drainage so pavers don't shift, sink, or heave with frost. Joint sand and edge restraints aren't included since they vary by pattern and border style.

Frequently asked questions

4 inches (10 cm) of compacted gravel base is typical for a patio or walkway; driveways usually need 6-8 inches (15-20 cm).

No — joint sand volume depends on the gap width and paver pattern, so it isn't included in this estimate.
