How this fence calculator works

Posts needed is your fence length divided by post spacing, rounded up, with one added for the final post at the end of the run. Pickets needed is the total length divided by one picket's width plus its gap, also rounded up. Cost multiplies each material's count by its price and adds post cost and picket cost together.

Rounding post and picket counts up matters because a fence can't be built with a fractional post or picket — under-ordering just means a second trip to the store. An 8 ft (2.4 m) post spacing is the standard default for wood fencing, balancing rail strength against how many holes you need to dig; rails, gates, and footing concrete aren't included here since their scope varies too much by design to estimate generically.

Frequently asked questions

Divide your total fence length by the post spacing (commonly 8 ft / 2.4 m for wood fencing) and round up, then add one extra post for the end of the run.

Divide the total fence length by one picket's width plus the gap between pickets. A tighter gap or wider picket both reduce the count.
