Estimate only — assumes standard modular brick (3.625 x 2.25 in face) with a 3/8 in joint.

How brick count is calculated

We multiply wall area (length × height) by 7 bricks per square foot — the standard coverage for modular brick (3.625 x 2.25 in face) laid with a 3/8 in mortar joint, or 60 bricks per square meter for a 215 x 65 mm brick with a 10 mm joint — then add 10% waste and round up to a whole brick. Mortar bags follow a separate rule of thumb of about 7 bags per 1,000 bricks.

The bricks-per-square-foot rate comes from standard modular brick dimensions plus a standard joint width, both fairly consistent across US brick manufacturers, so it's a reliable shortcut for a material list before a detailed takeoff. The 10% waste allowance runs higher than block or concrete because brick breaks more easily and gets cut more often at corners, openings, and course transitions — running short mid-job on brick is a bigger schedule hit than for larger units.

Frequently asked questions

About 7 bricks per square foot for standard modular brick with a typical mortar joint — this varies slightly with brick size and joint thickness.

About 7 bags of mortar mix per 1,000 bricks is a common rule of thumb, though joint thickness and brick face size can shift this somewhat.
